Overview

What this trip is like

Jomolhari stands on Bhutan’s border with Tibet, a white pyramid of 7,326 m that Bhutanese hold sacred. This trek walks up the Paro river to its base camp at Jangothang, rests there for a day beneath the mountain, and then turns east over two passes close to 5,000 m to come out above Thimphu.

It is a serious trek. The days are long, the first two alone cover more than 40 km, and you sleep above 4,000 m for four nights. You need to be fit, used to walking for six to eight hours a day, and ideally to have trekked at altitude before. In return you walk through yak herders’ villages, with blue sheep on the slopes above, to a fortress on a hilltop at Lingshi with nothing but mountains behind it.

The route lies inside Jigme Dorji National Park and close to the border, so it needs a park permit and an army permit. We arrange both. In mid-October the Jomolhari Mountain Festival is held at Dangochong, the village just below base camp. It is listed for 14 and 15 October in both 2026 and 2027, and a trek can be timed to reach it.

  3. Day 3

Drive to Shana and trek to Soi Thangthangkha

An early drive takes us up the Paro valley, past Drukgyel Dzong, to the road head at Shana, where the crew and pack animals are waiting. The trail follows the river upstream all day through forest of oak, rhododendron and fir, crossing and recrossing it on bridges. It is a long day, and the path is stony and often muddy.

The camp is in a meadow. If the evening is clear, Jomolhari shows at the head of the valley.

  4. Day 4

    Soi Thangthangkha to Jangothang

The valley widens and the trees fall behind. We pass an army post, where permits are checked, and then the yak herders' settlements of the upper valley, among them Dangochong. Jangothang, the base camp, is a broad meadow beside a ruined fort, with Jomolhari rising directly above it.

  5. Day 5

    A day at Jangothang

A rest day, which the body needs before the passes. Resting at altitude works best with some gentle exercise, so there are walks in three directions: up the valley towards the foot of Jomolhari, up the ridge to the north for a view of Jichu Drake, or to the twin lakes of Tsophu, about an hour and a half above camp. Blue sheep graze the slopes around the camp.

  6. Day 6

    Over Nyile La to Lingshi

The trail climbs steadily out of the valley to Nyile La, the first of the two high passes. From the top the view runs back to Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. On the long descent Lingshi Dzong comes into view, a small fortress on a hill in the middle of a wide valley, and we camp below it.

  7. Day 7

    Over Yeli La to Shodu

The longest and highest day. We start early and climb through the morning to Yeli La at 4,930 m, the highest point of the trek. On a clear day you can see Jomolhari, and other peaks along the border, from the pass. The descent follows a stream down a long valley to the camp at Shodu, where the first trees reappear.

    Shodu to Barshong

The path follows the Thimphu river down through a gorge, crossing it several times, past waterfalls and cliffs. The forest thickens as we lose height. A last climb leads to the ruins of Barshong Dzong, where we camp.

Questions

Asked about this trip

Do I need trekking experience?

It depends on the trek. The Bumdra trek and the Druk Path need no previous trekking, only the fitness to walk uphill for three to five hours. The Dagala trek is best if you have done a multi-day walk before.

The Jomolhari trek has long days and passes close to 5,000 m, and you should have trekked at altitude before. The Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks are for experienced, very fit trekkers only. Each trek page states the grade plainly.

Which treks need permits?

The Bumdra, Tsaluna, Druk Path and Dagala Thousand Lakes treks need no special permit. The Jomolhari, Soi Yaksa, Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks run close to the northern border and through Jigme Dorji National Park, so they need both an army permit and a park permit. We apply for these as part of your booking, and there is nothing you need to do.

Will I get altitude sickness?

On a cultural tour it is unlikely to be more than mild. Paro and Thimphu lie between 2,200 m and 2,350 m, where many people notice a little breathlessness or a light headache for the first day. The highest points are Tiger’s Nest at 3,120 m and road passes of 3,100 m to 3,988 m, which you visit and come down from.

Treks go much higher, and we plan them with acclimatisation days. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking. More in altitude in Bhutan.

Do I need travel insurance?

It is no longer a condition of entry: the government lifted the requirement in April 2024. We still strongly recommend it. Medical facilities are limited outside Thimphu, and a serious problem can mean evacuation abroad.

For a trek, your policy must cover walking at the altitude of the route and evacuation by helicopter. Check the altitude limit in the small print.
