Overview
What this trip is like
This is the fullest picture of Bhutan that fits into a normal holiday. Over eleven days you visit seven valleys: Thimphu, Punakha, Phobjikha, Trongsa, Bumthang, Paro and Haa. The first five are strung along the single highway that runs east from the capital. Haa lies the other way, over the Chele La pass from Paro, and sees far fewer visitors than any of them.
The trip is built so that the long drives come in the first half, while you are fresh, and the last three days are spent close to Paro. Three nights in Bumthang include a day in the Tang valley. A flight of about 25 minutes brings you back west. At present it flies on Thursdays and Sundays. If it cannot operate we return by road and re-plan the last days with you.
Nothing here is strenuous. The only real walk is the one to Tiger’s Nest, on the last full day.

Thimphu
We spend the morning at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum and the Textile Museum, and the afternoon on the hill above the town: Changangkha Lhakhang, the Takin Preserve and the view from Sangaygang. Tashichho Dzong is the last visit of the day. At weekends we add the farmers' market by the river, where the whole valley shops for vegetables, dried cheese and chillies.

Over Pele La to Trongsa and Bumthang
We cross Pele La into central Bhutan and follow the road past Chendebji Chorten to Trongsa. The dzong here is the largest in the country, a chain of courtyards and temples running down a ridge, and by tradition every crown prince serves as its governor before he becomes king. The watchtower above it is now a museum.
After lunch the road climbs over Yotong La and drops into the Chumey valley, the first of Bumthang's four.

Day 6
The temples of Bumthang
We visit Jakar Dzong first, for the view up and down the Chokhor valley, and then walk between the temples on the valley floor: Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang and, over a footbridge, Tamshing Lhakhang. The afternoon is unhurried, with time for the town and its small shops.

We drive into Tang, stopping at Mebar Tsho, the Burning Lake, where Pema Lingpa is said to have recovered sacred treasures from the water. The road continues up a narrowing valley of farms and sheep pasture to the foot of Ogyen Choling. A half-hour walk brings us to the manor house and its museum.

In Haa we visit Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo, the White Temple and the Black Temple, and have lunch in the valley. We return to Paro by the same road in the afternoon.

Questions
Asked about this trip
How many days do I need in Bhutan?
Four days is the least we would suggest, and it covers Paro and Thimphu. Six or seven days is what we suggest for a first visit: it adds Punakha, and at seven days the Phobjikha valley. To reach Bumthang in central Bhutan you need nine or ten days, and the far east takes two weeks or more.
Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, each extra day has a clear cost. We would rather you saw three valleys well than six in a hurry.
When is the best time to visit Bhutan?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the most settled weather and are the busiest months. Spring brings rhododendrons and Paro Tshechu. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and Thimphu Tshechu.
Winter is cold but dry and sunny, with few visitors, and it is the season for black-necked cranes and the Punakha festivals. Summer is the monsoon: green and quiet, with cloud on the passes. Our month-by-month guide goes into detail.
What are the hotels like?
Our standard trips use 3-star hotels approved by the Department of Tourism. Expect a clean, comfortable room with a private bathroom and hot water, and Wi-Fi that works best in the towns. Most are built in the Bhutanese style and are run by local families or companies.
East of Bumthang the choice is narrower and the hotels are simpler. If you would like 4-star or 5-star hotels, tell us and we will price the trip with them.
