Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek
High lakes and empty ridges south of Thimphu
- 10 days / 9 nights
- Moderate
- Up to 4,520 m
- Apr–May, Sep–Nov
Overview
What this trip is like
The Dagala range rises south of Thimphu, close to the capital and yet hardly visited. The trek through it takes five days. It climbs from farmland to open ridges above 4,000 m, where dozens of small lakes lie in hollows among the rocks, and comes down to a monastery with a view straight over the Thimphu valley.
There are not a thousand lakes, but there are enough that you stop counting. The trail is narrower and rougher than the Druk Path, with several climbs above 4,000 m, and you are unlikely to meet another trekking party. Yak herders use these pastures in summer and their stone huts are the only buildings for three days.
It suits walkers who have done a multi-day trek before and would like somewhere quieter than the better-known routes. No permits are needed. As on all our treks, the trip begins with two nights in Paro to adjust to the altitude and ends with Thimphu and Punakha.

Questions
Asked about this trip
Do I need trekking experience?
It depends on the trek. The Bumdra trek and the Druk Path need no previous trekking, only the fitness to walk uphill for three to five hours. The Dagala trek is best if you have done a multi-day walk before.
The Jomolhari trek has long days and passes close to 5,000 m, and you should have trekked at altitude before. The Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks are for experienced, very fit trekkers only. Each trek page states the grade plainly.
What is provided on a trek, and what do I bring?
We provide the guide, a cook and helpers, pack animals to carry the loads, sleeping tents, a dining tent with table and chairs, a toilet tent, sleeping mats and all meals. You walk with a day pack only.
You bring your own clothing, boots, a day pack, a head torch and a water bottle. The packing list has a section for trekkers.
When is the best time to trek in Bhutan?
March to May and late September to November. Spring has flowers and milder nights. Autumn has the clearest skies. High treks are not advised in the monsoon, from June to August, and the high passes are closed by snow in winter.
The low Bumdra trek can also be walked in winter. The Snowman has a much shorter window, usually late September to mid-October.
