- 29 days / 28 nights
- Very strenuous
- Up to 5,320 m

Overview
What this trip is like
The Snowman is the longest and hardest trek in Bhutan, and it is widely described as one of the most difficult long treks in the world. It follows the line of the high Himalaya along the northern border, from the Paro valley past Jomolhari to Laya, and then on into Lunana, a group of valleys cut off from the rest of the country by passes above 5,000 m. The route we use comes out at Nikka Chu, on the road between Phobjikha and Trongsa, after about 348 km.
The difficulty is not technical. It is the length of time spent high and far from help. You are on the trail for 24 days, most of the nights are above 4,000 m, and in Lunana the nearest road is several days’ walk away in any direction. Snow on a pass can hold a party up or turn it back. Evacuation is by helicopter only, and only when the weather allows.
You should have completed long treks at altitude before, be in excellent health, and have the patience for bad weather and changed plans. We will talk through your experience with you before accepting a booking, and we ask for insurance that covers helicopter rescue.
The season is short. The high passes are generally clear of both monsoon rain and winter snow from late September to mid-October. The trek needs army and national park permits, which we arrange.
If you want the first part of this country without the commitment, the Laya–Gasa trek follows the same route as far as Laya.

Questions
Asked about this trip
Do I need trekking experience?
It depends on the trek. The Bumdra trek and the Druk Path need no previous trekking, only the fitness to walk uphill for three to five hours. The Dagala trek is best if you have done a multi-day walk before.
The Jomolhari trek has long days and passes close to 5,000 m, and you should have trekked at altitude before. The Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks are for experienced, very fit trekkers only. Each trek page states the grade plainly.
Which treks need permits?
The Bumdra, Tsaluna, Druk Path and Dagala Thousand Lakes treks need no special permit. The Jomolhari, Soi Yaksa, Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks run close to the northern border and through Jigme Dorji National Park, so they need both an army permit and a park permit. We apply for these as part of your booking, and there is nothing you need to do.
Will I get altitude sickness?
On a cultural tour it is unlikely to be more than mild. Paro and Thimphu lie between 2,200 m and 2,350 m, where many people notice a little breathlessness or a light headache for the first day. The highest points are Tiger’s Nest at 3,120 m and road passes of 3,100 m to 3,988 m, which you visit and come down from.
Treks go much higher, and we plan them with acclimatisation days. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking. More in altitude in Bhutan.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is no longer a condition of entry: the government lifted the requirement in April 2024. We still strongly recommend it. Medical facilities are limited outside Thimphu, and a serious problem can mean evacuation abroad.
For a trek, your policy must cover walking at the altitude of the route and evacuation by helicopter. Check the altitude limit in the small print.
