Overview

What this trip is like

A week is the length at which a Bhutan trip stops feeling like a tour of sights and starts to feel like travel. This itinerary covers the three western valleys and then goes one further, over the hills to Phobjikha, a broad glacial valley at 3,000 m with a single monastery and almost no town at all.

Phobjikha is the contrast that makes the trip. After the dzongs and streets of Thimphu and Punakha you spend a night somewhere very quiet, walk for two hours through pine forest and open marsh, and in winter watch black-necked cranes feeding on the valley floor.

The drive back from Phobjikha to Paro is the one long day, five to six hours. If you would rather break it, the eight-day Bhutan Highlands Explorer adds a night in Thimphu on the way.

Itinerary

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu

From the airport we drive straight to Thimphu, an hour down one valley and up the next. It is a good first afternoon for something gentle. We visit the Buddha Dordenma, the great bronze statue above the town, and then Changangkha Lhakhang, where families bring newborn babies to be named and blessed.

You will feel the altitude a little on the stairs tonight. Drink plenty of water and it passes within a day.

  2. Day 2

    Thimphu

The morning is for the crafts. We visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where the thirteen traditional arts are taught, then the National Postal Museum, which tells the country's story through its stamps and its mail runners.

In the afternoon we stop at the National Memorial Chorten and walk through the craft bazaar on Norzin Lam. If a match is on at the Changlimithang ground we watch the archers shooting at a target 145 m away. Tashichho Dzong opens to visitors once the offices close for the day.

  3. Day 3

    Over Dochu La to Punakha

Dochu La, at 3,100 m, is 45 minutes out of Thimphu. Its 108 chortens stand on a knoll in the middle of the pass, and in clear weather the mountains along the Tibetan border fill the view. The road then winds down through changing forest to the Punakha valley.

We walk out to Chimi Lhakhang before lunch. The afternoon belongs to Punakha Dzong, with its covered bridge, its steep entrance stairs and the courtyards where Bhutan's first king was crowned in 1907.

  4. Day 4

    Punakha to the Phobjikha valley

We start with the walk to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, across the river and up through the rice terraces. Back at the road we drive south past Wangdue Phodrang, whose dzong was founded in 1638 and rebuilt after a fire in 2012, and then climb steadily for two hours. Bamboo and rhododendron replace the rice, and the road crosses a ridge into Phobjikha.

Gangtey Goenpa stands on a spur at the head of the valley. We visit the monastery in the late afternoon and reach the hotel as the light goes.

  5. Day 5

The Gangtey nature trail, then back to Paro

The valley is at its best in the first hours of the day. We walk the Gangtey nature trail, about two hours and nearly all downhill, from the monastery through pine forest to the edge of the marsh. From November to March the cranes are feeding here, and the Crane Information Centre has telescopes trained on them.

Then comes the long drive west, back over Dochu La and on to Paro. We break it for lunch and for tea at the pass.

  6. Day 6

    Hike to Tiger's Nest

After five days at altitude the walk to Taktsang is easier than it would have been on arrival. The trail climbs through blue pine to a teahouse, then on to a viewpoint level with the monastery, and finally down and up a staircase cut into the cliff.

In the afternoon we visit Kyichu Lhakhang, and then Rinpung Dzong, the fortress above the river that houses Paro's monks and its district offices.

Questions

Asked about this trip

How many days do I need in Bhutan?

Four days is the least we would suggest, and it covers Paro and Thimphu. Six or seven days is what we suggest for a first visit: it adds Punakha, and at seven days the Phobjikha valley. To reach Bumthang in central Bhutan you need nine or ten days, and the far east takes two weeks or more.

Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, each extra day has a clear cost. We would rather you saw three valleys well than six in a hurry.

When can I see black-necked cranes?

The cranes arrive in the Phobjikha valley from late October and stay until February or March. The best times of day are early morning and dusk, when they fly between their roost on the marsh and the fields where they feed. The valley holds a festival for them at Gangtey Goenpa on 11 November each year.

Will I get altitude sickness?

On a cultural tour it is unlikely to be more than mild. Paro and Thimphu lie between 2,200 m and 2,350 m, where many people notice a little breathlessness or a light headache for the first day. The highest points are Tiger’s Nest at 3,120 m and road passes of 3,100 m to 3,988 m, which you visit and come down from.

Treks go much higher, and we plan them with acclimatisation days. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking. More in altitude in Bhutan.
