Overview
What this trip is like
Very few visitors go east of Bumthang. Those who do find a different Bhutan: steeper valleys, warmer air, villages set high on the slopes, and people who speak Sharchop and weave some of the finest cloth in the country.
This journey crosses the country by its one east-west road. You reach Bumthang in five days, then spend two long days driving on to Trashigang over Thrumshing La, the highest pass on the highway. Four nights in Trashigang give you three full days for the east: the pilgrim sites of Gom Kora and Chorten Kora, the weavers of Radhi, and the college town of Kanglung.
You should be comfortable with long days on mountain roads and with simple hotels east of Bumthang. In return you see the country whole.
Two ways to end the trip
Return to Paro (this itinerary). You drive back to Bumthang over two days, fly to Paro and finish with Haa and Tiger’s Nest. Everything stays inside Bhutan and you leave from the airport you arrived at.
Leave by road through Samdrup Jongkhar. From Trashigang it is a day’s drive south to the border town of Samdrup Jongkhar. From there you cross into Assam and continue to Guwahati airport. This saves the two-day drive back and shortens the trip to about 14 days, but you need an Indian visa that allows entry by land, and Paro and Tiger’s Nest must come at the start of the trip. The drive from Trashigang to Samdrup Jongkhar is 180 km and takes about seven hours, and Guwahati airport is about three hours beyond the border.
Tell us which you prefer when you enquire and we will send the matching day-by-day plan.

Trashi Yangtse is known for its woodturners, who make the lacquered wooden bowls used across Bhutan. We visit a workshop before driving back.

Radhi and the road towards Merak
East of Trashigang the road runs through Rangjung to Radhi, a village surrounded by rice terraces. The women here weave raw silk on backstrap looms and dye it with plants, and we call at one or two houses to watch.
Beyond Radhi the road climbs towards Merak and Sakteng, the highland home of the Brokpa, yak herders with their own language and dress. Merak is about 65 km from Trashigang, two to three hours each way, so a visit needs a full day of its own.

-
Day 11
Trashigang Dzong and Kanglung

Questions
Asked about this trip
How many days do I need in Bhutan?
Four days is the least we would suggest, and it covers Paro and Thimphu. Six or seven days is what we suggest for a first visit: it adds Punakha, and at seven days the Phobjikha valley. To reach Bumthang in central Bhutan you need nine or ten days, and the far east takes two weeks or more.
Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, each extra day has a clear cost. We would rather you saw three valleys well than six in a hurry.
What are the hotels like?
Our standard trips use 3-star hotels approved by the Department of Tourism. Expect a clean, comfortable room with a private bathroom and hot water, and Wi-Fi that works best in the towns. Most are built in the Bhutanese style and are run by local families or companies.
East of Bumthang the choice is narrower and the hotels are simpler. If you would like 4-star or 5-star hotels, tell us and we will price the trip with them.
When is the best time to visit Bhutan?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the most settled weather and are the busiest months. Spring brings rhododendrons and Paro Tshechu. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and Thimphu Tshechu.
Winter is cold but dry and sunny, with few visitors, and it is the season for black-necked cranes and the Punakha festivals. Summer is the monsoon: green and quiet, with cloud on the passes. Our month-by-month guide goes into detail.
