Overview
What this trip is like
Ten days lets you stay three nights in Bumthang, and that changes the trip. One day is for the old temples of the Chokhor valley. The other takes you up a side road into Tang, the most remote of Bumthang’s four valleys, to a pool called the Burning Lake and a manor house that is now a museum of rural life.
The way out is by road through Thimphu, Punakha, Phobjikha and Trongsa. The way back is a flight of about 25 minutes to Paro. At present it flies on Thursdays and Sundays. If the flight cannot operate we return by road and re-plan the last days with you.
In spring this itinerary can be timed for the Ura Yakchoe, a village festival in the highest of the Bumthang valleys. Tell us if you would like that and we will set the dates to fit.

Kurjey Lhakhang, a little further up the valley, is where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated and left the print of his body in the rock. Across the river is Tamshing Lhakhang, where you can try on the chain-mail coat made by its founder, Pema Lingpa, and walk round the shrine in it as pilgrims do.
We end at Jakar Dzong, the castle of the white bird, above the town.

At the head of the valley we walk up to Ogyen Choling, a manor house that is now a museum, with rooms laid out as the household used them. We have lunch there or by the river and drive back in the afternoon.

Questions
Asked about this trip
How many days do I need in Bhutan?
Four days is the least we would suggest, and it covers Paro and Thimphu. Six or seven days is what we suggest for a first visit: it adds Punakha, and at seven days the Phobjikha valley. To reach Bumthang in central Bhutan you need nine or ten days, and the far east takes two weeks or more.
Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, each extra day has a clear cost. We would rather you saw three valleys well than six in a hurry.
When is the best time to visit Bhutan?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the most settled weather and are the busiest months. Spring brings rhododendrons and Paro Tshechu. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and Thimphu Tshechu.
Winter is cold but dry and sunny, with few visitors, and it is the season for black-necked cranes and the Punakha festivals. Summer is the monsoon: green and quiet, with cloud on the passes. Our month-by-month guide goes into detail.
Can you change an itinerary to suit me?
Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. Trips are private, so we can add or remove days, swap one valley for another, slow the pace, upgrade hotels or build the whole trip around a festival or a trek. Tell us what you have in mind on the tailor-made page or in any enquiry form.
