Overview

What this trip is like

The Soi Yaksa trek is the round trip to Jomolhari. The name is also written Soe Yaksa or Yaktsa, and many walkers know the route as the Jomolhari Loop. It goes up the Paro river to the base camp at Jangothang by the same trail as the Jomolhari trek and rests there for a day beneath the mountain. Then, where that trek goes on east towards Thimphu, this one turns south and comes back to the Paro valley another way: over Bhonte La at 4,890 m, down into the valley of Soi Yaksa, and out over two more passes.

You see Jomolhari and Jichu Drake from close below, as the longer trek does, and you finish in the valley where you started. Beyond base camp come the twin lakes of Tsophu, the pass, and the Soi Yaksa valley, where yak herders live and where blue sheep and marmots are often seen on the slopes.

It is shorter than the Jomolhari trek and not a great deal easier. The first two days cover more than 40 km, you sleep above 4,000 m on three nights, and the last day drops more than 1,500 m to the river. You should be fit and used to walking six to eight hours a day, and it helps to have trekked at altitude before.

The route lies inside Jigme Dorji National Park and close to the border with Tibet, so it needs a park permit and an army permit. We arrange both. In mid-October the Jomolhari Mountain Festival is held at Dangochong, the village just below base camp. It is listed for 14 and 15 October in both 2026 and 2027, and this trek can be timed to reach it.

Itinerary

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Paro

Your guide meets you at the airport. We spend the afternoon at Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum above it, and leave time to rest. Paro is at 2,200 m, and the days ahead go a good deal higher.

  2. Day 2

    Tiger's Nest

The climb to Taktsang is a first day at altitude with a bed in the valley at the end of it, which is the right way to begin. In the afternoon your guide checks your kit and talks through the route, the passes and the routine of a day in camp.

  3. Day 3

Drive to Shana and trek to Soi Thangthangkha

We leave early and drive up the valley, past Drukgyel Dzong, to the end of the road at Shana, where the crew and the pack animals are waiting. From there the trail keeps to the Paro river all day, upstream through oak, rhododendron and fir, crossing from bank to bank on bridges. It is a long day on a path that is stony and, after rain, muddy.

Camp is in a meadow. On a clear evening it gives you a first sight of Jomolhari at the head of the valley.

  4. Day 4

    Soi Thangthangkha to Jangothang

The forest thins and then gives out as the valley opens. We pass the army post, where our permits are checked, and the settlements of the yak herders in the upper valley, Dangochong among them. Jangothang, the base camp, is a wide meadow by a ruined fort, and Jomolhari rises straight above it.

  5. Day 5

    A day at Jangothang

A day in one place, for the body's sake: tomorrow's pass is 800 m above the camp. Rest at this height is better with a walk in it, and there are several. One goes up the valley towards the foot of Jomolhari; another climbs the ridge to the north for a view of Jichu Drake. Tomorrow's trail passes the lakes of Tsophu, so today is better spent on one of the others.

  6. Day 6

Over Bhonte La to Soi Yaksa

Here we leave the trail that goes on to Lingshi. Ours crosses the river and climbs steeply out of the valley to the twin lakes of Tsophu, at about 4,380 m, and then more steadily to Bhonte La, the highest point of the trek at 4,890 m. From the pass Jomolhari and Jichu Drake are behind you and a new valley lies ahead.

The way down is long, more than 1,000 m, to the Dhumzo Chhu and the scattered houses of Soi Yaksa, where we camp. Look for blue sheep on the slopes and marmots among the rocks.

  7. Day 7

Over Takhung La to Thombu Shong

A shorter day, though it begins with a climb of about 700 m. The trail goes up past the last houses of the valley to Takhung La, where the view opens back to Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. A short descent brings us to Thombu Shong, a broad grassy bowl with a few herders' huts, and an early afternoon in camp.

    Altitude
Takhung La, about 4,520 m. Camp at about 4,180 m

    Meals
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  8. Day 8

Over Thombu La and down to the Paro valley

A last climb, through rhododendron, leads to Thombu La. Then the trail runs along a high ridge with the upper Paro valley beneath it, and at the end of the ridge it drops steeply, more than 1,500 m, through forest to the river and the army post at Gunitsawa, a short way down the valley from Shana, where we set out. The vehicle is waiting, and the hotel in Paro has a hot shower.

    Travel

  9. Day 9

    Paro to Thimphu

An easy day after the trek. We drive to the capital in about an hour and go up to the Buddha Dordenma, the great seated Buddha that looks down the valley. After lunch there is time for the craft bazaar and a walk in town, and Tashichho Dzong opens to visitors once the government offices close.

The road east climbs to Dochu La at 3,100 m, with its 108 chortens and, on a clear morning, snow peaks along the northern horizon. From there it winds down to Punakha, more than 2,800 m lower than your camp at Jangothang and warm with it. We walk across the rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang and visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 where two rivers meet.

Questions

Asked about this trip

Do I need trekking experience?

It depends on the trek. The Bumdra trek and the Druk Path need no previous trekking, only the fitness to walk uphill for three to five hours. The Dagala trek is best if you have done a multi-day walk before.

The Jomolhari trek has long days and passes close to 5,000 m, and you should have trekked at altitude before. The Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks are for experienced, very fit trekkers only. Each trek page states the grade plainly.

Which treks need permits?

The Bumdra, Tsaluna, Druk Path and Dagala Thousand Lakes treks need no special permit. The Jomolhari, Soi Yaksa, Laya–Gasa and Snowman treks run close to the northern border and through Jigme Dorji National Park, so they need both an army permit and a park permit. We apply for these as part of your booking, and there is nothing you need to do.

Will I get altitude sickness?

On a cultural tour it is unlikely to be more than mild. Paro and Thimphu lie between 2,200 m and 2,350 m, where many people notice a little breathlessness or a light headache for the first day. The highest points are Tiger’s Nest at 3,120 m and road passes of 3,100 m to 3,988 m, which you visit and come down from.

Treks go much higher, and we plan them with acclimatisation days. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking. More in altitude in Bhutan.

Do I need travel insurance?

It is no longer a condition of entry: the government lifted the requirement in April 2024. We still strongly recommend it. Medical facilities are limited outside Thimphu, and a serious problem can mean evacuation abroad.

For a trek, your policy must cover walking at the altitude of the route and evacuation by helicopter. Check the altitude limit in the small print.
