Overview

What this trip is like

Every year in late October and November, black-necked cranes fly over the Himalaya from the Tibetan plateau to spend the winter in the Phobjikha valley. On 11 November the valley welcomes them with a festival in the courtyard of Gangtey Goenpa. Schoolchildren in crane costumes dance, the monks perform masked dances, and there are folk songs and short plays about looking after the birds and their marsh.

It is a small, friendly festival, organised by the local community with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature. This trip gives you two nights in Phobjikha, so you have the festival day itself and time on either side to watch the cranes on the valley floor. In the winter of 2024 to 2025 the Society counted 640 of them here.

The festival is held on 11 November every year, so the trip starts on 8 November and ends on 15 November. Phobjikha lies at 3,000 m and is cold in November, with frost most mornings. Bring warm layers and, if you have them, binoculars.

More about the day is on our Black-Necked Crane Festival page.

Questions

Asked about this trip

When can I see black-necked cranes?

The cranes arrive in the Phobjikha valley from late October and stay until February or March. The best times of day are early morning and dusk, when they fly between their roost on the marsh and the fields where they feed. The valley holds a festival for them at Gangtey Goenpa on 11 November each year.

Are festival dates fixed?

Most are not. Bhutan’s festivals follow the lunar calendar, so they fall on different dates each year. The Department of Tourism and the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators publish a list for each year and label it tentative, because dates can still move.

Our festival calendar shows the official dates and the day we last checked them. Confirm with us before you book flights. The Black-Necked Crane Festival is the exception: it is held on 11 November every year. If you are deciding between festivals, read how to choose a Bhutan festival.

What should I wear to a festival?

A festival is a religious occasion and Bhutanese come in their best clothes. Wear long sleeves and full-length trousers or a long skirt, and take off your hat inside a dzong. You will be sitting on stone for hours, often in strong sun, so bring a cushion, a sun hat for outside the dzong, water and a warm layer for the early morning.
