Overview
What this trip is like
This is the trip we would suggest to most first-time visitors. Six days gives you a full day in Thimphu, a night in Punakha and two nights in Paro, with nothing rushed and no day spent mostly in the car.
Sleeping in Punakha is what sets it apart from shorter tours. You see the dzong in the afternoon light, wake up in a valley a thousand metres lower and warmer than Thimphu, and have time for the morning walk up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten before heading back west.
With one more day you can add the Phobjikha valley: see Complete Western Bhutan.

Day 1
Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu
Your guide and driver meet you at Paro airport. On the road to Thimphu we pull over where the valley narrows to look across the river at Tamchog Lhakhang, reached by a bridge hung on iron chains.
The afternoon is kept light. We walk round the National Memorial Chorten with the people of the city, drive up to the Buddha Dordenma, and leave you time to find your feet on Norzin Lam, the main street, before dinner.

Day 2
A full day in Thimphu
We begin where Bhutan's arts are taught. At the National Institute for Zorig Chusum you watch students at work on thangka painting, sculpture and woodcarving, and the Textile Museum a few minutes away shows the finest of the country's weaving.
After lunch we climb to Changangkha Lhakhang, the 12th-century temple that watches over the town, and carry on to the Takin Preserve and the Sangaygang viewpoint above it. The last stop is Tashichho Dzong, which opens to visitors when the government offices close.

Day 3
Over Dochu La to Punakha
The road east climbs through forest to Dochu La at 3,100 m. We stop among the 108 chortens for tea and, if the sky is clear, the long view north to the high peaks. Then comes the descent into Punakha, where the air is warm and the fields grow rice, oranges and bananas.
We walk to Chimi Lhakhang across the paddy and spend the afternoon at Punakha Dzong. Built in 1637, it sits on a spit of land between the Pho Chhu and the Mo Chhu and is still the winter home of the monastic body. A short drive upstream, a footbridge about 160 m long sways gently over the river.

Day 4
Khamsum Yulley walk, then on to Paro
Before breakfast is the best time for the walk to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. The path crosses a footbridge, runs between rice terraces and climbs for about 45 minutes to a ridge with a view down the whole valley.
The drive to Paro takes three to four hours, with lunch at Dochu La on the way and a second chance at the mountains. In Paro we visit Rinpung Dzong in the late afternoon, when the courtyards are quiet, and walk down to the old wooden bridge below it.

Day 5
Hike to Tiger's Nest
Taktsang clings to a cliff high on the north side of the Paro valley. The trail up is steady and shaded, and you set the pace. Most people reach the teahouse viewpoint in about an hour and the monastery in two to three. Your guide takes you through the temples and the cave where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated.
After lunch we visit Kyichu Lhakhang and then a farmhouse, where the family will show you how a traditional Bhutanese house is laid out, from the animals' floor to the altar room.

Questions
Asked about this trip
How many days do I need in Bhutan?
Four days is the least we would suggest, and it covers Paro and Thimphu. Six or seven days is what we suggest for a first visit: it adds Punakha, and at seven days the Phobjikha valley. To reach Bumthang in central Bhutan you need nine or ten days, and the far east takes two weeks or more.
Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, each extra day has a clear cost. We would rather you saw three valleys well than six in a hurry.
What are the hotels like?
Our standard trips use 3-star hotels approved by the Department of Tourism. Expect a clean, comfortable room with a private bathroom and hot water, and Wi-Fi that works best in the towns. Most are built in the Bhutanese style and are run by local families or companies.
East of Bumthang the choice is narrower and the hotels are simpler. If you would like 4-star or 5-star hotels, tell us and we will price the trip with them.
How hard is the hike to Tiger’s Nest?
It is a steady uphill walk, not a climb. The round trip is about 7 km and most people take four to five hours including the visit. The path is wide and well used, a teahouse marks the halfway point, and the last stretch is a long flight of stone steps down and then up again. From the car park, at about 2,600 m, you gain a little over 500 m to reach the monastery at 3,120 m.
Anyone used to walking for a couple of hours can manage it at their own pace. Go slowly, because the air is thin. There is more in our guide to the hike.
