Overview

What this trip is like

This trip follows the same four valleys as our seven-day tour and uses the extra day to take the pressure off. The long drive back from Phobjikha is broken with a night in Thimphu, and the morning that frees up in Paro goes on Chele La, the highest road pass in western Bhutan.

Chele La stands at 3,988 m on the ridge between Paro and Haa. The road climbs to it through forest of blue pine, fir and rhododendron, and from the top you can see Jomolhari on a clear day. A walk along the ridge among the prayer flags is the high point of the trip in every sense.

It is a good choice if you dislike long days in a car, or if you are travelling with older family members.

Itinerary

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu

Your guide meets you at the airport and we drive to Thimphu. After lunch and a rest we walk round the National Memorial Chorten, built in 1974, and visit the Buddha Dordenma on its hilltop south of the town. The evening is free.

    Thimphu

Simply Bhutan is a small living museum where you can try on the national dress, shoot an arrow and taste butter tea, and it makes a friendly introduction to the day. From there we go on to the National Institute for Zorig Chusum and the Textile Museum.

After lunch we drive up to the Takin Preserve and the Sangaygang viewpoint, and stop at the nunnery of Dupthop Lhakhang on the way down. We finish at Tashichho Dzong.

    Over Dochu La to Punakha

We cross Dochu La in the morning, stopping at the 108 chortens for the view, and come down into Punakha in time for lunch. The path to Chimi Lhakhang leads through a village and across the rice fields.

Punakha Dzong takes up the rest of the afternoon. It was built in 1637 between two rivers, and jacaranda trees along the bank flower purple in late spring.

    Punakha to the Phobjikha valley

After an early walk across the long suspension bridge near the dzong, we drive up the valley side and east towards Phobjikha. The road climbs more than 1,700 m in two to three hours.

We reach the valley by early afternoon and visit Gangtey Goenpa, the monastery on the ridge, and the Crane Information Centre below it. Nights are cold here in every season, so keep a warm layer to hand.

The Gangtey nature trail, then back to Thimphu

We walk the Gangtey nature trail in the morning, two easy hours through forest and along the edge of the marsh. After an early lunch we drive back to Thimphu, with a stop at Dochu La.

You arrive with the evening free. If it is a weekend, the farmers' market by the river is open and busy.

Up to Chele La, then Paro

We leave Thimphu after breakfast, pass through Paro and climb the road towards Haa. It takes about an hour and a half from the valley floor to Chele La at 3,988 m. We walk along the ridge above the pass, through thousands of prayer flags, with Jomolhari in view when the weather allows. Lunch is a picnic at the top.

Back in Paro we visit Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum in the watchtower above it.

    Hike to Tiger's Nest

The walk up to Taktsang is kept for the last full day, when you are well used to the altitude. We go at your pace and stop at the teahouse on the way up and again on the way down.

The afternoon is easy: Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the country, and tea at a farmhouse.

Questions

Asked about this trip

Will I get altitude sickness?

On a cultural tour it is unlikely to be more than mild. Paro and Thimphu lie between 2,200 m and 2,350 m, where many people notice a little breathlessness or a light headache for the first day. The highest points are Tiger’s Nest at 3,120 m and road passes of 3,100 m to 3,988 m, which you visit and come down from.

Treks go much higher, and we plan them with acclimatisation days. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking. More in altitude in Bhutan.

What are the hotels like?

Our standard trips use 3-star hotels approved by the Department of Tourism. Expect a clean, comfortable room with a private bathroom and hot water, and Wi-Fi that works best in the towns. Most are built in the Bhutanese style and are run by local families or companies.

East of Bumthang the choice is narrower and the hotels are simpler. If you would like 4-star or 5-star hotels, tell us and we will price the trip with them.

Can you change an itinerary to suit me?

Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. Trips are private, so we can add or remove days, swap one valley for another, slow the pace, upgrade hotels or build the whole trip around a festival or a trek. Tell us what you have in mind on the tailor-made page or in any enquiry form.
