Overview
What this trip is like
Most visitors turn back at Punakha or Phobjikha. This trip keeps going east, over Pele La and past the great dzong at Trongsa, into Bumthang, the valleys Bhutanese think of as the religious heart of their country.
You travel out by road, one valley at a time, so the country changes around you gradually: rice and bananas in Punakha, dwarf bamboo on the passes, buckwheat and apple orchards in Bumthang. Two nights there give you a full day among temples that date back to the 7th century.
The return is a flight of about 25 minutes from Bumthang to Paro, which saves two days of driving. It depends on the weather and does not run every day, so we plan the dates around it. At present it flies on Thursdays and Sundays. If the flight cannot operate we return by road and re-plan the last days with you.

Over Pele La to Trongsa and Bumthang
This is the big travelling day. The road crosses Pele La, the traditional boundary between western and central Bhutan, where yaks graze beside the road in the colder months. Lower down we stop at Chendebji Chorten, a white stupa beside a stream.
Trongsa Dzong comes into view across a gorge long before we reach it. We have lunch in the town, walk through the dzong's stepped courtyards and visit the museum in the watchtower above. Then one more pass, Yotong La, and the descent into Bumthang through the weaving villages of the Chumey valley.

Day 6
The temples of Bumthang
The temples of the Chokhor valley lie close enough together to walk between. We begin at Jambay Lhakhang, founded in the 7th century, and continue to Kurjey Lhakhang, where a rock in the oldest temple bears the imprint of Guru Rinpoche's body. A footbridge leads across the river to Tamshing Lhakhang, founded in 1501, whose wall paintings are among the oldest in the country.
After lunch we visit Jakar Dzong above the town and leave time to walk the single main street.

Questions
Asked about this trip
How many days do I need in Bhutan?
Four days is the least we would suggest, and it covers Paro and Thimphu. Six or seven days is what we suggest for a first visit: it adds Punakha, and at seven days the Phobjikha valley. To reach Bumthang in central Bhutan you need nine or ten days, and the far east takes two weeks or more.
Because the Sustainable Development Fee is charged per night, each extra day has a clear cost. We would rather you saw three valleys well than six in a hurry.
When is the best time to visit Bhutan?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the most settled weather and are the busiest months. Spring brings rhododendrons and Paro Tshechu. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and Thimphu Tshechu.
Winter is cold but dry and sunny, with few visitors, and it is the season for black-necked cranes and the Punakha festivals. Summer is the monsoon: green and quiet, with cloud on the passes. Our month-by-month guide goes into detail.
Will I get altitude sickness?
On a cultural tour it is unlikely to be more than mild. Paro and Thimphu lie between 2,200 m and 2,350 m, where many people notice a little breathlessness or a light headache for the first day. The highest points are Tiger’s Nest at 3,120 m and road passes of 3,100 m to 3,988 m, which you visit and come down from.
Treks go much higher, and we plan them with acclimatisation days. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking. More in altitude in Bhutan.
