Overview

What this trip is like

A honeymoon is not the moment for a timetable. This trip takes the classic road through western Bhutan, from Thimphu to Punakha and the Phobjikha valley and back to Paro, and gives it ten days where most people give it seven. You spend at least two nights everywhere, every drive but one is under three hours, and several afternoons are left open.

It is a private trip for the two of you, with your own guide and driver. They are there when you want them and out of the way when you do not. Tell your guide on any morning that you would rather walk by the river than see another temple, and the day changes.

Bhutan suits a quiet start to married life. There are no crowds, and no nightlife to speak of. What there is instead is a walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, where couples from all over the country come to be blessed; butter lamps to light together at Kyichu Lhakhang; a wooden tub of water heated with river stones at the end of the Tiger’s Nest walk; and evenings with nothing planned.

Prices are based on 3-star hotels, with a double room. Many couples choose a finer hotel for some or all of the nights, and Bhutan has some very good ones. Tell us what you have in mind and we will price the trip with them. The same plan works just as well for an anniversary.

Itinerary

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu

Your guide meets you as you come out of the terminal, and the drive to Thimphu takes about an hour. After a long journey the afternoon is yours to rest. Towards evening, if you feel like going out, we walk round the National Memorial Chorten, where people come at the end of the day to circle the shrine and turn the prayer wheels.

  2. Day 2

    Thimphu

A gentle day in the capital. We go up to the Buddha Dordenma, the great bronze statue above the town, and then to Simply Bhutan, a small living museum where you can try on the national dress, the gho and the kira, shoot an arrow and taste butter tea. Many couples have their photograph taken there in Bhutanese dress.

After lunch you choose: the Takin Preserve and the craft bazaar, or time to yourselves. Tashichho Dzong opens to visitors in the late afternoon.

  3. Day 3

    Over Dochu La to Punakha

We leave after a relaxed breakfast and stop on Dochu La, at 3,100 m, for tea among the 108 chortens and, in clear weather, the view of the mountains along the northern border. The road then winds down to the Punakha valley, which is lower, warmer and greener than anywhere else on the trip.

In the afternoon we visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 where two rivers meet and reached by a covered wooden bridge. In late spring the jacaranda trees along the bank are in flower.

  4. Day 4

A day in the Punakha valley

The morning walk leads across a footbridge and up through rice terraces to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, on a ridge above the Mo Chhu. We come down for lunch beside the river.

Later we walk through the fields to Chimi Lhakhang. The temple honours Drukpa Kunley, the saint known as the Divine Madman, and couples from all over Bhutan come here to be blessed and to ask for children. Visitors are welcome to receive the same blessing.

    Punakha to the Phobjikha valley

After a walk across the long suspension bridge near the dzong, we drive up into the hills. The road climbs more than 1,700 m in two to three hours, and the rice gives way to bamboo and rhododendron.

Phobjikha is a wide, quiet valley at 3,000 m, with a monastery on a ridge at its head. We visit Gangtey Goenpa and are at the hotel in time for tea. Nights here are cold, so bring something warm for the evening.

  6. Day 6

    A day in Phobjikha

A day with almost no driving. In the morning we walk the Gangtey nature trail, about two hours and nearly all downhill, from the monastery through pine forest to the edge of the marsh. From November to March the black-necked cranes winter here, and the Crane Information Centre has telescopes trained on them.

    The afternoon is free.

    Back to Paro

  8. Day 8

    Paro

An easy day before the climb to Tiger's Nest. At Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, you can light butter lamps together.

We go on to the National Museum in its round watchtower, and walk down to Rinpung Dzong and the covered bridge below it. The afternoon is free for the craft shops in town, or for nothing at all.

  9. Day 9

    Hike to Tiger's Nest

The walk to Taktsang is what most visitors to Bhutan remember best, and doing it together on the last full day makes a good end to the trip. The trail climbs through blue pine to a teahouse, then to a viewpoint level with the monastery, and finally down and up a staircase cut into the cliff. We go at your pace.

Questions

Asked about this trip

What are the hotels like?

Our standard trips use 3-star hotels approved by the Department of Tourism. Expect a clean, comfortable room with a private bathroom and hot water, and Wi-Fi that works best in the towns. Most are built in the Bhutanese style and are run by local families or companies.

East of Bumthang the choice is narrower and the hotels are simpler. If you would like 4-star or 5-star hotels, tell us and we will price the trip with them.

Can you change an itinerary to suit me?

Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. Trips are private, so we can add or remove days, swap one valley for another, slow the pace, upgrade hotels or build the whole trip around a festival or a trek. Tell us what you have in mind on the tailor-made page or in any enquiry form.

When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the most settled weather and are the busiest months. Spring brings rhododendrons and Paro Tshechu. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and Thimphu Tshechu.

Winter is cold but dry and sunny, with few visitors, and it is the season for black-necked cranes and the Punakha festivals. Summer is the monsoon: green and quiet, with cloud on the passes. Our month-by-month guide goes into detail.
