About Trashiyangtse

Trashiyangtse is one of Bhutan’s youngest districts, created in 1992. It lies north of Trashigang, in the north-eastern corner of the country.

Chorten Kora is its landmark: a large white stupa beside the river, built in the 18th century on the model of Boudhanath in Nepal, and still a place of pilgrimage.

North of the town, Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the few places in Bhutan where black-necked cranes spend the winter. The flock is much smaller than the one at Phobjikha. The district is also known for dapa, wooden bowls turned on a lathe, and for handmade paper.

On our Bhutan from East to West journey, Trashiyangtse is a day out from Trashigang.

Questions

Good to know

When can I see black-necked cranes?

The cranes arrive in the Phobjikha valley from late October and stay until February or March. The best times of day are early morning and dusk, when they fly between their roost on the marsh and the fields where they feed. The valley holds a festival for them at Gangtey Goenpa on 11 November each year.
