About Dagana
Dagana lies south of Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang, and sees very few visitors.
Daga Dzong was built in 1651 on the orders of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, to guard the approach from the south. It is still the seat of the district’s government and of its monks.
Near it stand three megaliths: Do Namkhai Kaw, the Sky Pillar Rock; Do Kelpai Genthey, the Rock of Ancient Steps; and Tha Namkhai Dzong, the Frontier Sky Fortress. Legend says that while the dzong was being built, the last of these warned the builders not to raise it any higher, and that the dzong’s golden pinnacle is level with the top of the rock to this day.
None of our set itineraries goes to Dagana. If you would like to see it, tell us when you write, and we will say plainly what is possible on a tailor-made trip.
