About Pemagatshel

Pemagatshel is a small district in the south-east, between Mongar, Trashigang, Zhemgang and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Its best-known monastery is Yongla Goenpa, which the district’s own records date to 1736. Kheri Goenpa is older: it is said to have been founded in the 15th century by Kuenga Wangpo, a son of the treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa.

Bhutanese know Pemagatshel for tsatsi buram, a chewy sweet made from sugar-cane juice.
