Singapore is one of the few cities in the world with its own air service to Bhutan, which makes a Bhutan trip from Singapore possible in less than a week of leave. This page covers the flight, the paperwork and the trips that fit a short break.
The flight
Drukair, the national airline, flies between Singapore and Paro. It does not run every day and the schedule changes with the season, so the days of the flight usually decide the length of the trip: tell us roughly when you can travel and we will fit the itinerary to the timetable. The other common route is through Bangkok, which has more departures in the week. Both are described on our page about getting to Bhutan.
Paro is used only in daylight and clear weather, and a flight is occasionally put back to the next morning. Leave a day clear before you are due back at work.
Visa and the nightly fee
Singapore passport holders need a visa, approved before travel. It costs US$40, and we apply for it when you book from a scan of your passport, valid six months beyond the trip, and a photograph. Permanent residents travel on the rules for their own passport. The Sustainable Development Fee is US$100 a night for adults and US$50 for children aged 6 to 11, and is included in our prices, which are in US dollars.
Trips that fit a short break
Four days is the shortest trip worth making: the Bhutan Short Trip covers Paro, the walk to Tiger’s Nest and Thimphu. With five or six days you can cross the Dochu La pass to Punakha, as on the 5-day and 6-day tours. Families will find practical advice in Bhutan with children.
Altitude and climate
Coming from sea level, you will notice the height. Paro is at 2,200 m and Thimphu a little higher, enough to leave you short of breath on stairs for a day. It is rarely more than that on a cultural tour, and we plan the first day lightly. Bhutan is also much cooler than Singapore: even in summer the evenings want a jacket, and in December the nights fall below freezing. The packing list goes by season.
When to come
The June school holidays fall in the monsoon, when the valleys are green and the views are often clouded. The December holidays are cold, dry and clear, with the cranes in Phobjikha, and are the better of the two for scenery. March to May and October to November are the best months of all. Compare them in our guide to the best time to visit Bhutan.
Money and practical things
Bhutan is two hours behind Singapore. Bring spending money in US dollars, which are the easiest notes to change. Singapore three-pin plugs fit many Bhutanese sockets but not all, so pack an adaptor. Vegetarian food is easy to find everywhere; tell us about any other dietary need when you book.
Travelling from somewhere else?
We have written the same kind of page for travellers from the USA, the UK, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, France, India and Bangladesh and the Maldives.
Ask us
Tell us your dates and where you are flying from, and we will reply within 24 hours with a route, an outline of the days and a price. Send an enquiry, or start from a tailor-made trip.
