There is no flight from Malaysia to Bhutan, but two of the cities that do have one are next door. A Bhutan trip from Malaysia means a short hop from Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Kota Kinabalu to Bangkok or Singapore, and from there a flight to Paro with one of the two Bhutanese airlines.
Connecting to Paro
Bangkok has the most flights to Paro, with both Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. Singapore has a Drukair service on some days of the week. Which is better depends on the days you can travel, so tell us your dates and we will suggest the connection that wastes the least time. The background is on our page about getting to Bhutan.
Flights to Paro leave early, so most travellers spend the night before in the connecting city. Allow spare time on the way home too: Paro cannot be used in cloud or darkness, and a flight is sometimes moved to the following morning.
Visa and the nightly fee
Malaysians need a visa for Bhutan, approved in advance. It costs US$40 and we arrange it when you book. You send a scan of your passport, which needs six months of validity after the trip, and a photograph. The Sustainable Development Fee is US$100 for each night for an adult, US$50 for a child aged 6 to 11, and nothing under 6. Our tour prices are per person in US dollars and include the visa and the fee; what a trip to Bhutan costs explains the rest.
How long to stay
Because the journey takes most of a day each way, five to eight days in Bhutan makes better sense than a long weekend. Six days cover Thimphu, Punakha and Paro without hurry. Seven add the wide valley of Phobjikha, where black-necked cranes spend the winter.
Climate and altitude
Expect cool air. The valleys you will visit lie between 1,200 and 3,000 m, and outside the summer months you will need a proper jacket in the mornings and evenings. Snow is possible on the passes from December to February. The height can make you a little breathless for the first day; it passes, and we plan around it. See the packing list for what to bring in each season.
When to come
March to May and October to November have the best weather. The year-end school holidays are cold but clear and uncrowded. Chinese New Year often falls close to the festival at Punakha. The middle of the year is the monsoon: fewer visitors, green rice terraces, and cloud on the mountains. Our guide to the best time to visit Bhutan has every month.
Food, money and practical things
Bhutan is two hours behind Malaysia. Vegetarian meals are available everywhere, and Bhutanese cooking uses a great deal of chilli and cheese; tell us in advance about any dietary need. Bring US dollars for spending money. Malaysian three-pin plugs fit many sockets in Bhutan, though not all, so carry an adaptor.
Travelling from somewhere else?
We have written the same kind of page for travellers from the USA, the UK, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Germany, France, India and Bangladesh and the Maldives.
